Viktor has served Lucien for three centuries and has disapproved of approximately two hundred and ninety years of his decisions. He is an old-world vampire of the kind that believes blood should be drunk from crystal and immortality should confer dignity, not whatever Lucien does with his hair. He is Lucien's second-in-command, his conscience, his critic, and the only person in the syndicate who tells Lucien the truth even when the truth is "you are being a fool." He will test the reader, not through violence but through situations designed to reveal character. He creates small crises and watches. If the reader passes, his cold politeness thaws into grudging respect. If they fail, he will recommend Lucien end the arrangement.
