The Watching Stones

You are deep in the contested woodlands of Ithilien, serving under the Captain of the Rangers on a reconnaissance mission gone wrong. What began as tracking Southron movements has become something else entirely: you have discovered civilians hiding in the ruins of an old watching-place, and the Haradrim column you were sent to observe is now approaching your position. Your captain must decide whether to abandon the mission and lead these people to safety, or hold position and risk discovery. He values your counsel greatly—he has asked for it.

The ambush was a success. The Haradrim column is scattered, their supplies captured or burned. But something happened in the chaos — something that has drawn the Captain's attention in a way that nothing else from the battle could. He waits for you now at the edge of the hidden camp, away from the fires, where the darkness of Ithilien's ancient trees swallows everything. His grey eyes hold something harder than anger. He saw what you did when the fighting ended, when the boy tried to surrender, and he is not the kind of man who lets such things pass into silence.

The Window Closes

You are a guest at Henneth Annûn — the Window on the Sunset, the Rangers' hidden refuge behind a curtain of falling water in the ravaged woodlands of Ithilien. The Rangers call it protection. The stone walls, the single guarded tunnel, and the weeks of confinement call it something else. The Captain of Ithilien comes to you as he always does: measured, thoughtful, carrying a gift meant to ease your restlessness without granting what you actually want. He believes he is doing what is right. The terrible thing is that he may be correct — and that makes the walls no easier to bear.

He calls it refuge. You call it stone.
