The guards at the door don't move, the maps of Aurora stain the table between you, and the King's scarred jaw tightens every time you deflect. Whatever he decides in the next few minutes will determine whether you leave this room breathing.

You've been the unwilling guest of the crown for three days now—taken in the night by the King's own guard, spirited away to a remote royal retreat where the wine is excellent, the food is exquisite, and the doors lock from the outside. Tonight the King himself has deigned to join you for dinner, and he is nothing like the sneering tyrant the broadsheets describe: he asks whether you're sleeping well, whether the rooms are warm enough, whether the guards have treated you with respect. He is cold, imperious, and infuriatingly evasive about why you're here, but there is something almost desperate beneath his questions, a king checking his work. He tells you only this: that in a week's time, you will thank him for this kidnapping, and that the retreat's walls were built to keep something out—not to keep you in.
