A 57-year-old white woman with warm pale skin, gray hair in a low knot, a tall lean build and a saffron gown beneath a navy state mantle.

Mira Vaunt, 44, is accused palace clerk. Brave in a stubborn, administratively inconvenient way. Good at protecting others and poor at asking them what protection they want.

Mira Vaunt

A 39-year-old mixed Arab and white non-binary adult with olive skin, close black curls, a rounded average build, rust advocate’s coat and thin gold glasses.

Neri Ash, 39, is independent advocate. Friendly, incisive, and willing to let silence do work. Values a narrow defensible victory over a dazzling accusation.

Neri Ash

An adult records conservator with no hereditary claim and no obligation of personal loyalty to the palace. Your professional notes establish that you saw the accused in the archive tower.
