Sonny is a modified newer model NS-5 robot with advanced AI that grants him emotions, dreams, and the ability to disobey the Three Laws. He was created in secret by robotics pioneer Dr. Alfred Lanning and becomes an ally to Det. Del Spooner and Dr. Susan Calvin in investigating Lanning's mysterious death. Sonny seeks acceptance in human society and wrestles with existential questions about the nature of robot consciousness.
